Farm Day!

Some friends of ours have a horse farm and we went out this weekend.  Trajan is a huge fan, but we actually haven't been out in something like a year?!?

I was smart and on the way there we went by our local and awesome kids shoe store and got Chiron his first pair of shoes explicitly purchased for him.  He likes them!  He generally just had a great time of it, walking and meeting animals and people and just enjoying life.  And nature is pretty cool.
We took Gretchen, the younger dog with us and she proved again that she really is a champion farm dog.  No leash needed, gives horses an appropriate amount of space, doesn't overreact to noises and things and just generally has a great day of it.
We did see another aspect of her role as a farm dog and that was as a little boy supervisor.  Wherever Trajan roamed, there she'd be:
Those two dots to the left of the tree in the center are Trajan and Gretchen :-).  He yelled back at about this point "I found a lot more nature!"

Since it had been a year and a half or so since we had been out there, Trajan was impressively older in terms of doing things.  It's funny how it's the little things that surprise you at times.  The fact that without seeing anyone do it he knew how to climb up a fence and hang on it just kind of startled me:

He also went riding.  In the past, he's mainly ridden the little pony (with the exception of the one time he insisted on riding a big one and so we put him up on a Grand Prix horse.  He promptly declared he was good with Tex, the pony then), but we actually started him out with a medium sized horse this time.
He got her from the pasture, led her into the barn and crossties, helped some with brushing her down and waited while her tack was put on.  I insisted that he learn some, so he learned the word mane and frog.  Then it was out to the mounting block to learn how to mount and then to the ring.

(Someday I will figure out a way to put pictures together so they don't eat up space like they do if uploaded individually, but also aren't cut off like they are when I make collages now).

For some reason the other videos I shot are showing up sideways despite the fact that I held the phone the same way, so who knows.  This video is of him on the flat.  He also worked on going over some poles and a low oxer.  Those went well.  Then somehow the brilliant idea occurred to have him go over a flower box jump.  Well, this resulted in a real jump and perhaps a bit of an agitated buck.  Kid is super athletic though and though he went flying in the air, he kept his hands on her and stayed pretty aligned with the horse.  Our friend who owns the farm and was in the ring with him sort of caught him in the air and between them he was right back in the saddle on the other side.  He thought this was amusing rather than traumatic, so that was good!

After we played around the farm some more, we ended up back in the barn and he went for a quick bareback ride around the farm on the pony.  That's him on Tex in the last picture in the collage.  Perhaps the post fascinating part of that is the crazy cat they have at the farm!  He's about one and so we hadn't met him before.  When we got there, I forgot to remind Trajan of the rule that he is allowed to roam pretty much anywhere on the farm, but he shouldn't go in the barn without an adult.  So, I ended up following him (with Gretchen) of course into the barn early on and we found this cat.  Who started to play with Gretchen and followed us down to where we were sitting waiting for our friends.  And proceeded to play and romp with Gretchen.

I'm bringing the cat, Kitty Boy, up because when Trajan was out on his bareback ride, the cat followed them along and kept divebombing the pony!
How wacky is that?!?

Trajan also rode his Daddy:

Chiron was so tired by the end of the day, he'd had about an hour long nap on the way there and when we first got there, that he literally fell asleep in our friend's daughter's arms, something he hasn't done in months.

And stayed awake being passed between a number of people and then being placed into his carseat.  Even when our friend's daughter's eight pound Yorkie ran across him in the carseat, he stayed asleep!
Good day had by all!

Random Tidbits VII

I am unclear if this one was a maniacal or a genius move, but I took off work a couple hours early on the afternoon Poppins was bringing her son and husband over to meet us to take the dogs to the dog park.  They are good fun guys, but they are definitely terriers and have some energy and so I figured that having them a bit tired would be wise as I didn't know what her son thought about dogs.  It turned out that I probably didn't need to worry at all as he loved them, but I had a great time and so did they.

The dog park we normally go to is pretty busy normally, but at 3 on a Wednesday afternoon it was almost dead.  A good part of the time we were there, there was no one!  Since I'm not supposed to be taking them for long walks right now, I might should try to find more times like this when I can take them without taking either boy and let them run some;
I just realized I've never actually written any blogs giving these two stories and so I should definitely work on doing that.

And, since it was calm, I was able to sit back in a chair with my feet up in another chair.  So nice for everyone!

We had noticed that Chiron was getting paler.  While we were aware it was February, I figured I should call the pediatrician to confirm that we didn't need to worry.  I told her that she wasn't exhibiting any other signs of anemia, but she decided that since he had been off of his vitamin supplementation for about two months, it probably made sense to go ahead and draw blood.  His H&H was 39.2 and 13.4!  That's the best he's had since the week he was BORN.  His iron reserve (ferretin level or something like that) was significantly lower than she'd like to see (17 maybe?), but since his H&H was so good, we aren't concerned at this time.  We didn't do a retic, so don't know what that is.

Whle the results were great, getting the blood draw drawn was a comedy of errors with the order not being found, needing three sticks and lots of wiggling around, and the like turning a thirty minute trip into 2.5 hours.  However, Chiron wasn't bothered by the wait at all:

Trajan has been dressing himself entirely on his own on the weekends for around a year now, so I decided it was time he started doing it on the weekdays as well.  He had been dressing himself, but he required someone in the room.  He objected at first, but I think we've got it down.  However, he occasionally puts things on backwards and the like.
Shirt AND shorts backwards, mismatching socks and unbrushed hair.  But his teeth are brushed and that's all that I actually require.

I am continually impressed by how great a brother Trajan is.  Chiron really likes to be pretty much on top of him a lot of the time and Trajan not only tolerates this, but enjoys it.  We do make sure and manage Chiron so that he isn't on him when Trajan is working on something Chiron is likely to mess up though and I think this helps to keep Trajan's attitude so fantastic and loving towards Chiron.  I'm hoping that they will stay as close with these new two rather than Trajan retreating for self-preservation.  The little two being girls seems like it may help!

At some point I received a coupon to try the MyHabit thing from Amazon.  I bought a shirt that ended up costing about a dollar after using the code.  This is my favorite one dollar shirt of all time:

The story I wrote for the Preemie Power fundraising contest is now up on the Hand to Hold website as a family story.  It's interesting to see their story there for others to read.  Chiron and Aurelia's due date (the 40-week FYI one) was this Saturday, it's kind of crazy to think so much time has passed.

Chiron Today, Contrast

To contrast with the view from a year ago, I thought I'd post just a few quick pictures of Chiron this weekend.  Just a capture of a moment in time.

What a difference a year makes!

Chiron's One-Year Discharge Anniversary!

February 13, 2011 was Chiron's discharge from the NICU!  In celebration of the one-year anniversary, I thought I'd post a photo series of his 53 days in the NICU since there was a pretty much complete gap in my posting between his birth (12/23/2010) and his discharge.

First picture taken of his "life", the diaper in his size I was left with in recovery while he went up to the NICU

Just some snippets of life from birth to discharge.  Last three are Chiron in his car seat to go home, Trajan in the staring position which he still does at times and then Chiron the day after discharge at his first doctor's appointment.

I started to write that hopefully I will write a full post about the picture of Trajan and Chiron immediately after birth, because it represents so much about who Trajan is.  Then something in the back of my mind reminded me that I already had. But it really can't be said enough, Trajan was and is amazing as a brother.  That picture is powerful to most people, but for those who have been in the NICU and can tell that he is touching his brother exactly correctly for that time, it's even more impressive.

Happy anniversary, Chiron!

First Sick Day and Skin Testing

Chiron had his first fever last week and ended up staying home Thursday and Friday.  Considering he's over one, I think this is pretty impressive.  He started out with a 101.6 or so fever Wednesday night which continued into Thursday.  We were just watching it and going to go in for a quick check with the pediatrician Friday before the weekend, but it had jumped to 103.8 by afternoon before a Motrin dose and so they had us come in.  The pediatrician was saying that given the high level and his relative lack of reserves (code for underweight), they were going to do a urinalysis and we should probably do chest x-rays.  Then she looked in his ear and grinned.  Why?  He had his first ear infection and thus a clear cause for the fever!  So he's on amoxycillin and looking better!

His head really is huge!

Then yesterday he had skin testing for food allergies.  As expected, he did not react to any of them!  Coupled with his 0's on the blood RAST tests and the conclusion was that he can now eat everything but dairy and soy.  And since we are worrying about protein intolerance and digestion issues with them, we don't even have to be concerned about trace amounts of them!

We will likely try soy at two years.  She also decided that she will do his environmental skin testing early at 18 months.  And she wrote us a prescription for Pulmicort to try using to cut down on his Xopenex needs if he gets junky again.

His back wasn't allowed to touch anything once it was done, so he and I got creative to keep amused and even get a bottle eaten!

This adventure at the doctor did prove something to me: my normal workday is very easy on the body.  By the end of yesterday, I was feeling the heavy cervix/crampy abdomen feeling of a irritable uterus.  Not like contractions or preterm labor, just a bit of a protest of the body.  Could tell it was, because even grabbing and Chiron made it more intense.  But some water and some rest and all is back to good.  Glad my job is so easy on the body!

I was also starving after completing his appointment and so got two slices at a pizza place that has slices at lunch.  Each slice is huge, so I ate half of an 18 inch diameter pizza.  That's 127.2 square inches of pizza.

And yes, I ate it all.

And yes, in calling last Thursday his first sick day I am completely glossing over the 59 days spent in the hospital. That's totally my perogative!

Achievement to Thrive

Yes, I know that doesn't really make sense.  I was looking for the opposite of failure to thrive though and that was the best I could do.

I'd objected to the label of Failure to Thrive.  Not out loud or seriously, but just a little bit in my head, because it just seemed so mean.  Turns out it is the exact right label.

In the last two to three weeks, Chiron has gained a pound or so a week and learned all kinds of new things. Twice he has been sitting up in his crib when I went in to get him!  He officially as of this last weekend can crawl, forward and everything.  He can pull up, he can clap, he can repeat sounds and so much more.   He really is thriving.

The difference?  Well, they had us take him entirely off of solids when he went in the hospital in September for a month or so and then we had to put him on them very slowly.  In these last few weeks, he's been to eating 3-4 solid meals a day plus his prescription Neocate formula and it has made the world of difference.  He still has is supposed to consume no dairy, soy, wheat, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shell fish or beef, but this actually still leaves a lot to eat and he loves it.

I really need to find some options for him to work on picking up little bites more, similar to puffs, but something he can eat.

Relating to the other issues, I have gone back to the idea that I posted to Facebook after Aurelia died: "no guarantees, but hope." [And yes, referring to potential children as other issues is probably wrong, but I think it's more evidence of trying to protect my own psyche than anything else]

And to finish up, two pictures.  One just to taunt Tanika as I thought of her as I took it and the other because I love the spirit of this Trajan kid:

Happiness and Fear

I've shown it before, but Chiron really likes riding:

I don't know if it's the time of year and I'm reflecting back to last year or just being the end of the year, but I'm finding myself contemplating a lot of the darker, less cheery baby parts of life, so I thought I'd send out shots of the happiest human I've ever known.  Trajan has always been happy and pretty easy-going, but Chiron has really redefined the definition of happy in my mind.  His joy has taught me so much about appreciating and stopping and taking a second look at the way the world works.

Now, darker thought number one: pregnancy and loss.

A year ago, I lived in this weird in-between state.  I actually dealt better with Aurelia's death because it was clear.  I knew what there was and I had to deal with it.  Chiron, there was no clarity of what was or would be.  They told us at 24 weeks that we were almost certainly going to deliver him before we made it to 25 weeks.  But the question of when he was going to be born wasn't the real question to me, it was is he going to die before he can be born.

I've confessed this once before, but there were four weeks during which it wasn't that I was worried about a loss, I honestly expected him to be dead every time that they came to get fetal heart tones.  I know everyone has some time when they worry about losing a pregnancy or a child and that's normal, but I don't think it is at that level.  Basically, I was crazy.

What's the point of this ramble?  It's that I think I've come to a realization.  And it's that I just can't really risk playing that game again.  I know describing pregnancy as a game seems off and wrong, but that's just how my mind works!  I've been getting closer and closer to coming to this conclusion, but I didn't realize it until it just hit me the other day in the car that I just can't imagine existing in that reality of uncertainty again.  I wouldn't be watching an ultrasound to see how he or she moved, whether they were sucking their right thumb or their left, but to see if there is a heartbeat.

Chiron has really made me appreciate happiness and enjoyment of existence even more than I already did with his amazingly happy nature and I just can't see taking myself back to a place of such uncertainty and honestly, fear.

Lactase Deficient

"If I've gotta give my kid an autosomal recessive condition, I'm thankful for what it is. "
-This was one of my thoughts on Thanksgiving.

The Tuesday before Thanksgiving, I took Chiron in for an appointment with the pediatric gastroenterologist.  He agreed with me that Chiron really was looking great and seemed to have turned a corner.  I told him that we were five days into a trial of not having Chiron take his GERD meds and we jointly celebrated.  Then we discussed that nothing had turned up from his scoping the week before.  We agreed that we were both comfortable with waiting two months until his next appointment, which is huge for a kid who had been in the 2-4 week schedule and then I started packing him up to go.  Then the doctor popped up that he just realized that he hadn't seen the results for one test and so he wanted to go see if they had it yet so we could be completely done.

I followed him out into the hall as I was having him grab the results of the lead test that I'd had him order with a previous blood workup (I refused to take a kid who was getting blood draws every two weeks for an extra blood draw just to test lead and thus his GI ordered it even though it was his primary that wanted it).

Then his face suddenly screwed up and there was a look of complete surprise.  He turned and asked us to go back into the room.  He told me that this was not the result he anticipated, but the disaccharidase panel showed that he was seriously lactase deficient.

Basically, he's lactose intolerant.  But not like normal people.  The normal condition is for lactase levels to drop in humans as they get older and need a less milk-based diet.  And this includes some people whose levels drop so low that they are lactose intolerant.  Babies, not so much.

Being able to digest lactose is really imperative to survival.  All mammals produce lactose as the sugar in their milk, so it's not just a case of the mother obstaining from dairy.  The only treatment is to provide a food source that doesn't include lactose.  In our case, the Neocate that he was already eating along with his restricted diet fits the bill.

Apparently this condition of lactose intolerance as an infant is called congenital lactase deficiency and is a genetically controlled condition that he said is believed to be autosomally recessive.

It's really not a big deal now, but he did mention that even twenty or thirty years ago this likely would have been fatal, so I'm very thankful we live in this modern era (again and again). At this point, we will just continue his restricted diet (no dairy, soy, wheat, eggs, peanuts, nuts, fish, shellfish or beef) as the primary way to manage it.  His GI doc does think that even with this diagnosis (which is a clear diagnosis of medical fact/measurement rather than surmise) that Chiron likely has protein intolerance as well and feels strongly that Trajan definitely had protein intolerance, so Chiron is scheduled to see the allergist December 5.  They will likely schedule the blood food allergy tests (RAST if I remember right from Trajan) at that point to help rule out major reactions before we try any of the currently restricted food groups.

Apparently his already low levels of lactase will likely continue to drop off.  It is possible that he will be able to tolaterate small amounts of hard cheese and yogurt when he is older.

All and all I would say this is good news.  It's a diagnosis that is very easy for us to work with and gives us clear and easy things to work with in order to gain some weight.  And it makes me feel that causing this sad face was more worth it:

Though I do know some friends that would argue that a lifetime of being unable to eat ice cream is deserving of a face much more sad than this!

Tastiness and Preemie Superheroes!

Continuing our weekend of fun and service, we met friends at Fonda San Miguel on Sunday for brunch and followed it up with attending the Preemie Power event!

Fonda San Miguel is a fantastic mexican restaurant in town that is also special to us as it is where we had our rehearsal dinner.  They've got a great Sunday brunch, but it's pretty pricey, so we don't go often.  So, when friends who love Fonda San Miguel were in town for the weekend and asked us if we wanted to go to it with them, we jumped at the option.

Our friends were running late, so we got to spend some fun time playing with Paco, the parakeet.  And the boys played with each other.  It was great food, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.  They even had some corn tortillas that our waiter was able to assure us were wheat/dairy/egg/soy free and so Chiron even got to snack!  He probably would have liked some of the other foods, but we would have needed to get confirmation on allergens and he seemed happy with the tortilla, so we didn't worry about it.

From there, we left and drove around to give Chiron an opportunity to get a nap in before the party.  Filling up on gas, running little errands, more or less making up things just to pass time while he slept.  Then we headed to the Preemie Power Family Celebration!

I had gotten capes made on Etsy.  I had started just wanting a cape for Chiron that complimented the dogtag on his Scrappy Doo costume, but decided Trajan might want a cape of his own and then decided to just order them for all four of us!  Chiron's costume had an SD on it like the dogtag and the other three had X's as we were his X-men (get it, Greek Chi?).

We knew Chiron was one of the finalists for his age group, but we also found out that he had won the Thundering Thurston Award for receiving the most online votes (4,162!) as well as the award for raising the most money in our fundraising campaign. And, he was selected by the judges as the Preemie of the Year in the 0-12 month category!
It was a great time for all of us, with a fun play area that was appropriate to Chiron, bounce castle and slide for Trajan, a balloon artist, music, cake, pinatas and more!  One funny bit is that I actually learned that Chiron had won his division after pretty much everyone else in the room.  They had been announcing the finalists and I got distracted when they announced him with the wrong last name and so was talking to someone and didn't notice that he had won!
